Erster Landgang
Mit etwas Verspätung landeten wir auf Grand Turks, einer schnuckeligen Insel inklusive Traumstrand und historischer Altstadt. Angesichts meines Internetmangels strich ich die Altstadt von der Sightseeing Liste, packte meinen Bikini ein und setzte mich in ein Café mit kostenfreiem WLAN. Endlich Internet! Eine Stunde später, nach einigem Schriftwechsel mit Mado (Danke für die Tipps! Mado <3 Ja, ich sollte halt nicht zu schnell denken, den Kulturschock schon überwunden zu haben.) schmiss ich mich in meinen Bikini und ging schwimmen. Das Wasser war herrlich und blau und alle waren gut drauf. Dann ging es wieder an Bord zum Mittag und schon legten wir ab, den Leuten auf der Insel zuwinkend. (Vielleicht waren das noch unsere Leute..? Wie auch immer!)
Ich esse jetzt nur noch in der Gruppe um zu vermeiden, dass mich der Staff die ganze Zeit vom Kauen abhält. Das war ja echt schlimmer als bei Loriot: "Schmeckst?"
Direkt im Anschluss gab es eine Diskussionsrunde aller Sprecher, ob Obama fortschrittlich, also "progressive" sei. Zu Anfang gab jeder Sprecher seine Definition von "progressive" zum Besten, was unter logischen Gesichtspunkten auch schon eine Diskussion um diese gemeinsame Grundlage hätte hervorrufen müssen, damit man wenigstens vom gleichen Standpunkt aus anfängt zu diskutieren. Aber das sehen die Amerikaner nicht so krumm.
Die Definition von "progressive" von Alan Grayson und Hal habe ich als Video aufgenommen.
Die Diskussion war sehr gut. Jeder blieb bei seiner Meinung, die sich das Publikum anhören konnte. Produktivität ist wohl etwas anderes, aber ich denke das war auch nicht das Ziel der Diskussion. Wir sind schließlich im Urlaub. Außerdem komme ich mir eh vor wie ein Staubsauger für Informationen: Alles noch etwas ungeordnet und viele Leute, von denen gesprochen wird, kenne ich nicht, aber ich lerne jeden Tag dazu.
Englisch Lektionen heute: Amerikanisch ist ein anderes Englisch. Amerikaner sagen indirekt "nein", indem sie auf eine ja-nein Frage unkontrollierbar diffus antworten, statt positive oder negative Andeutungen zu machen. Amerikaner diskutieren nicht beim Essen, das wird als unangenehm empfunden.
Montag Abend ist der formelle Abend. Alle kamen in schicker Abendgarderobe, ich habe geglitzert, Hal hat eine schwarze Hose angehabt und ein schwarzes Hemd, das mit den Resten seines metallik-silbernem Nagellacks recht gut harmonierte. Diese Abend saß ich an seinem Tisch und in den gesprächen ging es um amerikanische Politik natürlich, lustige amerikanische Politiker, von denen ich nur zwei kannte, tiefgreifende Lebensphilisophien, Religionen und Kernphysik. Zur Abwechslung hatte ich mit Clint, der neben mir saß, ein wenig Smalltalk. Danach konnte ich mih wieder entspannt nach rechts wenden und Hal zuhören. Clint, Hal und ich waren die einzigen Personen am Tisch, die noch nicht pensioniert sind. Ganz allgemein denke ich, das wir drei allein schon den Altersdurchschnitt dieses Schiffes ruinieren.
Nach dem Dinner sind wir in die Bar umgezogen, außer Clint, der zum Karaoke abgedüst ist, und haben bei einem Drink weiter geredet. Meine Fresse haben Amerikaner einen Redefluss. Unglaublich! Sobald man atmet, redet gleich jemand anderes weiter. man hat als Nichtamerikanerin gar keine Chance mal eine eigene Meinung einzuwerfen, weil jedes mal wenn jemand atmet im Zweifelsfall Hal gleich wieder los legt. Und ich persönlich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass Hal so wenig Schlaf bekommt, weil er jede Nacht damit zubringt alle Möglichen Fakten und Information bis ins kleinste Detail auswendig zu lernen. Unglaublich!
Dem entsprechend spät ging der Abend zu ende: wir waren schon zweimal auf dem Weg zu unseren Kabinen gewesen und hatten uns dann doch noch zu David Bender gesetzt.
Dienstag:
Heute Nacht wurde und eine Stune geklaut. Wir sind auf dem Weg nach San Juan in Puerto Rico. Mal sehen was die Stadt so zu bieten hat. Am morgen gab es schon eine Sitzung mit Mike Malloy und seiner Frau. Jetzt umfahren wir gerade die Stadt San Juan, deswegen werde ich mal auf Deck 5 ein paar Foto schießen… bis gleich!

First Shore Leave
With minor delay we arriver at Grand Turks, a cute little island with dream beach and a historic city. Due to my lack of internet I scratched the city centre off my sight seeing list and went straight to the holy place of wifi, which was a restaurant. One hour later I was updated and thanks to Mado I understood that a culture shock can't be overcome in one day. (Thank you very much!! <3 <3 <3) After that I wrapped myself up in my Bikini, thanks to Carolyn for applying those sun lotion and preventing skin cancer. :) And then I swam for a really long time. I even went to another beach and swan there too in crystal clear, blue and comfortably warm water. For Lunch I went back onboard where we all waved the people at the island as the ship moved on. (Maybe we accidently left them there..? What ever!)
Lunch and Breakfast I now only eat in the shelter of a group, so waiters won't stop me from chewing all the time by asking if I'm alright. That was more horrible than it was in that Loriot sketch: "Schmeckts?"
Then our session event began with the topic: "Is Barack Obama a Progressive?" At the beginning each speaker gave his definition of the word "progressive".
I recorded Alan Grysons and Hal Sparks Definition of what they think is "progressive".
I like this session very much and again gathered a huge load of information about american politics and lot's of american politics I've never heared of. I didn't really see the goal of this session and if it was meant a discussion or just a presentation of lot's of opinions. I t turned out to be a mixture of both.
My English lesson today was: Amerikan English is not UK English and I don't refer to the accent: If an American answeres a yes-no question in a circuit diffuse way it means: no. Glad to know that. I Germany we at least have positive or negative hints in our answer… And Americans hate to discuss anything during meals. We do that at dinner at that's no problem, but breakfast and lunch? It's off-limits!
Monday night was formal dress code night so everyboday arrived a bit more polished than usually. I glittered, Hal wore black which ssorted very well with the remains of his metalic silver nail polish. This evening I sat at Hals' table and the topics as I remember them (not to be complete) were: of course american politics and politicans (of most I've never heard of), profound philisophy of life, religions and nuclear physics. For a change I had some smalltalk form time to time with my likable man sitting next to me Clint, before I turned back to my right side to listen to Hal again. I think Hal, Clint and me were the only people at that table not yet retired. And I believe we ruin the age average on this ship.
After dinner Clint went to karaoke and the rest of us headed to have a drink in the bar we meet every evening for further discussions which we had. For me it's unbelievable what a continuous oral fluency Amercans can unveil: If the speaking person takes a breath somebody else already took over the conversation. As a German who waits for a little break to insert own opinion here, it's just not possible so get a word placed in a conversation. Especially with Hal, because he takes every opportunity to talk. I have my own theory why Hal is getting so less sleep: It's because he connects to the internet at night and updates on every information there is in detail. Unbelievable how much detailed inforamation this man has stored between his ears.
According to all those discussions through two attempts to leave (but then we sat down with David Bender and Jon Sinton) it was a long night which i enjoyed.
Thuesday:
This night we travveled in another timezone so we lost one hour on our way to Puerto Rico. Just now we arrived at San Juan. I'm going to take some pictures… See you later!
